Brave resident pursues robbers, loot abandoned

A gang of robbers struck at a Sunward Park house just after midday, on Tuesday, January 27, but lost all of their loot when a member of the community pursued them.

According Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Kwendzakwakhe Ngobese, the gang forced their way into the family home with the intent to steal.

Unbeknown to the intruders, one of the family members, a 49-year-old woman, was in the house.

The robbers demanded jewellery from her, but the woman told them that she didn’t have any.

The victim watched helplessly as they loaded the loot into their white van, before they fled the scene.

Another resident in the vicinity, however, witnessed the robbery and gave chase in his vehicle, while also alerting the police.

“The resident followed the gang to Rand Airport, in Germiston, where the robbers jumped out of their getaway vehicle and fled on foot, leaving behind the stolen goods,” said Ngobese.

“Police arrived and about R30 000 worth of stolen property was retrieved. No injuries were sustained during the incident.”

The Advertiser learnt that the stolen goods and the vehicle were taken to the Germiston Police Station, and the woman who was robbed by the hoodlums visited the station to identify her possessions.

No arrests have been made so far, but police are investigating a case of house robbery.

* In another, unrelated story, a 25-year-old woman told the police that she was raped and robbed of her belongings, in Comet, on Tuesday Morning, January 27.

“She was walking on a footpath, near ERPM Golf Club, when she was confronted by a gun-wielding man. He dragged her into the nearby bushes, where he raped her, before stealing her belongings, including a cellphone, shoes and cash,’ said Ngobese.

No arrest has been made, but police are investigating the incident.
