Wall collapses during heavy storm
A heavy storm hit some parts of Boksburg, mainly Bartlett and Impala Park, on Sunday, January 25.
According to EMS spokesperson William Ntladi, the Disaster and Emergency Management Services received a call about a flood at around 5.30pm.
“The rescue team from Leon Ferreira Fire Station responded promptly to the scene and found that several houses experienced flooding along Leith, Copper and Elizabeth roads, over the N12 freeway bridge,” said Ntladi
“Several trees also fell down as a result of the storm. Fortunately no structures were damaged.”
The rescue team from the fire station, together with Parks Department officials, used chainsaws to cut and remove the fallen trees.
“Stormwater draining systems managed to handle the huge amount of water experienced as a result of the storm.”
Ntladi said no injuries or fatalities were reported.
However, Hiren Kanjee, a resident at Ethan Close on Leith Road, told the Advertiser that the complex suffered severe damage.
“A brick wall, which separates residents’ properties from one another, collapsed. Due to the heavy rains, some houses and yards in the complex were also flooded,” said Kanjee.
“This is a result of the stormwater drains on Ridge Road being blocked and unable to handle the water when it rains. This is not the first time it happened, but previously it wasn’t this bad,” said Kanjee.
The newspaper reported the blocked stormwater drain to the metro, but received no response by the time of publication.
