Convicted animal abuser allowed to have pets

Johannes Jansen van Vuuren (25), from Paul Kruger Street, received a suspended sentence after he was found guilty of cruelty to animals, on May 29.

He pleaded guilty to the charge in the Boksburg Magistrates Court.

On December 26, 2013, the accused ill-treated and neglected his pitbull puppy by exposing it to dirt and parasitic conditions.

He made the animal sleep outside, next to piles of garbage, which the dog tore open and ate.

He was sentenced to a fine of R5 000, or five months imprisonment, suspended for five years.

The State requested that Jansen van Vuuren be found unfit to possess animals in the future; this was denied.

Magistrate Josias presided over the hearing, and Ntombi Mbonani appeared on behalf of the State.

  1. Its such a shame that the SPCA go to so much trouble to try to have people like this convicted and then the courts don’t penalize the abuser more harshly.
