Educator to run in Two Oceans

Excelsior Academic College educator Heidi Mehring, will compete in next month’s Old Mutual Two Oceans Half Marathon race in Cape Town.

Her decision to participate in the race for her first time was made to raise money for the SPCA.

“As I’ve never attempted the Two Oceans race before, the SPCA challenge looming ahead of me is rather daunting. However, with my students constantly reminding me that so many four-legged friends are counting on me, clearly failure is not an option,” says the Parkrand mentor.

“As adults, I believe it is our duty and responsibility to motivate our youth in becoming socially aware and participating citizens of society. Often those citizens that need the most help are the ones who do not always have a voice.”

Mehring believes that education is not only what an educator “teaches verbally in a classroom environment”, but what you instill in your learners who emulate your actions as opposed to just your words.

She has held various bootcamp events across Gauteng in the last few months to assist in raising funds.

”Aside from doing things for others, when you’re committed to a challenge, it’s about seeing it through to the end. The bootcamps have also got a number of our learners more physically active.

“Inactivity in the youth is of great concern to me, as a balance between studying and physical exercise can never be emphasised enough.”

She teaches subjects in International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and A-levels as part of the Cambridge International Examination to both full- and part-time students at the college situated in Parkrand.
