Boksburg hard at training ahead of Community Cup opener

The much-anticipated Cell C Community Cup is upon us with the first round of matches kicking-off on Saturday, March 8.

The Boksburg Rugby Club begin their campaign with an away trip to Limpopo to face-off against BB Truck Noordelikes.

The Advertiser visited one of their training sessions on Tuesday, February 25, ahead of the clash.

Veteran scrumhalf Dirk Burger, who’s in his 10th year with the club, says preparations for the tournament are on track.

“The team is doing well (in preparing); we’ve been trying new things and a lot of improvising has been done,” says the halfback.

“There are a bit of struggles as far as our positioning and combinations are concerned, but it’s something that can be worked on.

“We’ve also got niggles (minor injuries) to a couple of players but we’re very confident.

“I’ve been playing for the club for a decade now but it’s still a privilege to be here.”

Asked how the mood in the squad is, the man known as “Dirkie” says: “Very good. There are no cliques and instead, we’ve got a number of clowns like Ashwill Adams, and then there’s Calvin (Jantjes), who always gets picked on by the coach,” he joked.

The Owls depart for Polokwane on Friday with their match scheduled to kick-off at 4.30pm on Saturday.
