Rain forces a draw
The rain that fell on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29, played its part in ensuring a draw between The Unlimited Titans and the Nashua Cape Cobras, in their four-day Sunfoil Series encounter at Sahara Park Willowmoore, in Benoni.
Almost two full days were lost due to the excessive rain.
Not a ball was bowled on the second day (Friday) and only 23 overs were played on Thursday.
The two days that followed basically became batting practise for both teams, as the Titans posted 491/7 (declared) in the weather-affected affair.
Heino Kuhn (71), Francois le Clus (59), Cobus Pienaar (62), former Actonville Spurs all-rounder David Wiese (63), Roelof van der Merwe (72 not out) and a blitzing 105 not out off 73 balls from number nine batsman Shaun von Berg contributed to the large total.
The Cobras posted 410/7 on day four, in reply to the Titans’ first innings score.
Stiaan van Zyl notched up his 13th first class ton and second consecutive century in the match.
The batsman was ruthless with the willow and added 176 runs off 276 balls for the fourth wicket, with Justin Ontong.
Ontong scored 73 after a pull shot off CJ de Villiers went wrong and was caught at fine leg.
Van Zyl would eventually be removed by Wiese, after he was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle.
The Cobras did well to get 9.2 batting bonus points out of the match, while the hosts grabbed 9.34.
Wiese finished with figures of 3/77 in 22 overs, while Von Berg bagged 3/125 in 30 overs.
At the time of going to press the Titans were sitting at third place after two games behind the Cobras and the bizhub Highveld Lions.
