Springs sink Boksburg cricket team

Boksburg Cricket Club suffered a 39-run second consecutive home defeat in the hands of Springs Old Boys on Sunday, October 27.

Boksburg skipper Marius Labuschagne won the pre-match coin toss at a sunny Prince George Park and elected to send the visitors to bat first.

Old Boys gladly obliged and piled up a mammoth 249 runs after 46 overs at the crease to set a challenging target for Boksburg.

Openers Klarren Wooley and Jose van der Berg set the tone for their side’s victory with 50 runs between them (Wooley 24, van der Berg 26) before JP de Klerk slowed down the run-rate momentum by contributing eight before exiting the pitch.

No four batsman Tyron Victor was next at the crease, and was dismissed for one to prolong the brief bad spell for the visitors.

The middle order, however, won the game for Old Boys.

Wickus Germishuizen re-steadied the ship for his side with 55.

Highest run scorer for Old Boys on the day, Dalton Smallberger, smashed 56 to make Boksburg’s mountain-to-climb steeper.

The home team began the chase confidently with Jay Haywood handing his team a good platform to build on after scoring an impressive 67.

Opening partner Fritz Sommer scored an additional 12 runs to keep the score ticking before Len Meyer (13), and Ruan du Plessis (32) scored 45 between them to further reduce the deficit.

Old Boys’ solid fielding, however, deprived Boksburg’s middle order of scoring more runs which placed the bottom order under huge pressure.

Labuschagne only manage to score two runs after Earth de Beer’s 17, before being caught out.

The crumbling batting order added a further 38 runs with last man Sean Holder being sensationally bowled out for four runs to put any hopes of a late Boksburg surge to bed.
