Francis, Wethmar, Kruger run for cancer
Dave Francis, Lezel Wethmar and Stanley Kruger took part in the City to City 50km run for cancer from Pretoria to Johannesburg on Sunday, September 29.
The annual run, which is designed to raise awareness, began as far back as 1904, and saw the three, who took part as representatives of Wesleyan Church in Parkrand, join thousands of other runners run from the Centurion Gautrain station to Melrose.
Francis, who is also an 11-time participant of the Comrades marathon, made his sixth appearance in this year’s edition after losing his 20-year-old niece to leukaemia in February this year.
Wethmar too experienced similar grief when she lost her 42-year-old brother to cancer in June.
When asked about his experience of the event, Francis says: “It was a tough run, you don’t get any support unlike the Comrades; you on your own.”
“The amount of people who turned-up and in support of the event was amazing.”
Kruger and Francis both received a bronze medal for finishing over six hours and Wethermar received gold for finishing under six hours.
