Hewitt case postponed to January

The rape and sexual assault case against former Grand Slam doubles tennis champion Bob Hewitt has been postponed until January 10.

The court hearing was held at the Boksburg Magistrate court on Friday, October 4, as two of the three alleged offences occurred within its jurisdiction.

According to Boksburg’s senior prosecutor, Henk Strydom, because the incidents occurred in different jurisdictions, the public prosecutor has applied to have the charges against Hewitt centralised and heard in the same court.

Despite his absence at his first court hearing, Hewitt was charged with two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault of minors in cases that date back as far as the early 1980s.

Two of the alleged victims were under the age of 16 at the time and the third was under 18.

Hewitt denies the charges and has previously threatened to sue his accusers.

The 73-year-old Hewitt was not present on Friday, citing continued ill health after he missed the first court hearing in August.
