Ekurhuleni seniors get a chance to shine in golf
The Ekurhuleni Golf Union has been one of the front runners when it comes to senior golf in South Africa.
Formerly known as the Eastern Transvaal Golf Association (Eastern Gauteng Golf Union), the union has been in the forefront of the game for more than 50 years and growth in the senior ranks is still rapid.
Its Inter-Club Seniors Tournament has been played since 1962, with a competition between the old Northern Transvaal, Eastern Transvaal and Western Transvaal held since 1969.
The union has also produced several South African senior strokeplay champions over the years, including Manie Grobler, Anton Vortsman and Deon Becker.
It runs the Order of Merit table, which is used to select players in both the senior and super senior (60 years and older) sections and which sees the players participate in a full annual national inter-provincial competition, with the support of the South African Golf Association.
Over the weekend of November 9 and 10, the union will host its Senior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship for A Division golfers (0 – nine handicap) at the ERPM Golf Club, and B Division golfers (10-18 handicap) at the Lake Club Benoni.
All male golfers who are members of a club affiliated to the South African Golf Association are eligible to enter.
