The statement outlines the race organisers’ ambitious target to enlist at least 10 000 participants (10 000 pairs of feet) for the third annual walk.
The initiative is the first activity on Ekurhuleni’s October programme, which is dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of the late struggle stalwart, O R Tambo.
The walk is an official Race Walking League event and will take place at the O R Tambo International Airport sports field, over distances of 21km, 10km and 5km.
However, the Liberation Walk is not just about health and fitness, it’s about education.
Proceeds from the race go to charities and organisations involved in education, with the aim of ensuring that every child in South Africa is afforded the right to education.
South Africans are, therefore, encouraged to rally behind the campaign, either by participating in the walk, or donating or pledging books, magazines or stationery.
Entries for the walk are open and forms are available at various sports shops or by visiting www.tamboliberationwalk.co.za.
