Tambo memorial equipped to provide better service

The Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg has purchased new equipment to improve the standard of services it offers to the public.

This emerged during a visit to the hospital by the Gauteng Health MEC, Hope Papo, on Tuesday, August 20.

To address negative staff attitudes, the hospital is providing in-service training and customer care workshops to staff.

Progressive discipline is also undertaken against staff that display an unacceptable attitude towards patients and other service users.

The X-ray equipment was replaced with a new unit worth R16-m and old equipment such as anaesthetic machines, ventilators, and data scopes were replaced.

The hospital also purchased new advanced equipment such gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy and portable ultrasound machines.

They now have six fully-equipped theatres, enabling the hospital to conduct 842 surgical operations per month.

To minimise disruptions during power outages, the hospital has six generators, which are tested on a weekly basis.

Papo undertook to support the hospital in an effort to improve the infrastructure. The external renovation of the corridors, passages and stairways, as well as nurses and doctors residences have been identified as some of the areas that need attention.

Last year 4 000 patients were admitted as a direct result of accidents and emergencies.

Interventions have also been made to improve cleanliness and staff attitudes.

A total of 30 cleaners were employed recently.

They will conduct “spring cleaning” once a month, and ensure continuous cleaning of high traffic areas such as theatres, labour ward, the accident and emergency unit as well as the outpatient departments.
