Plastic surgery trends grow locally

Resident Sunward Park Hospital plastic reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Daniel Hoffman, says that plastic surgery is quite popular in the Boksburg area.

According to independent research carried out by the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of Southern Africa (APRSA), the local plastic surgery market is in line with global trends.

Over the past 10 years, the market has seen an increase of 780 per cent in non-invasive procedures such as Botox injections and a 128 per cent increase in breast procedures.

Hoffman says that his patients who go under the knife, are both male and female, are of all ages, and are from all walks of life, because financing cosmetic procedures is now a greater possibility.

There are various surgical and non-surgical procedures available to individuals.

These vary from breast reconstruction, liposuction, breast reduction, breast augmentation, wrinkle fillers, suspension sutures, and facelifts, to name a few.

Hoffman says majority of his patients are women and young girls, who suffer back aches from large breasts, as well as women who want to go back to their pre-pregnancy bodies.

“The most popular procedures that patients want done are tummy tucks, liposuction and breast reduction,” he says.

Beautifying one’s self does not necessarily mean going under the knife, but there are also non-surgical procedures that are also available.

“These include wrinkle fillers and the popular Botox, which paralyses facial muscles and is used to lift the brow and temporarily remove wrinkles.

Hoffman says that Botox is also done to assist patients with chronic headaches and migraines, pointing out that non-surgical procedures and the variety of creams that are available on the market are temporary, and are a waste of time.

He warns against the large number of unregistered doctors and unlicensed clinics who dabble in plastic surgery.

“Patients must always get a second opinion and ask the right questions before surgery. Information from the internet is not always accurate,” he warns.

Hoffman encourages patients considering plastic surgery to be on a healthy balanced diet and exercise programme first, and not to have unrealistic expectations about plastic surgery.
