Douglas feels awesome after championships
Parkrand's Douglas Erasmus describes his experience at the recent World University Championships, in Russia, as "really awesome".
The local swimmer made it to the semi-finals of the 50m freestyle event. He swam the distance in 22.7 seconds.
The 23-year-old also completed the 50m breaststroke in 29.1 seconds.
Erasmus has been swimming for eight years.
He started the sport when a school teacher at his high school, Christian Brothers College (CBC), advised him to join a club.
Now the Tuks student is looking to qualify for next year’s Common Wealth Championships.
The Common Wealth trails will be in April next year, and the championships in June in New Zealand.
The championships in Russia were the local star’s first international competition.
“It is hard to explain what it’s like, because it’s very different. The standard is also very high.”
Erasmus’ big goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“Work towards 2016 and then stop swimming competitively,” he says.
He will also still be legible for the 2015 World University Championships in Korea.
Erasmus is currently working hard on his sprint technique.
