Season review: Casey Arnold talks about CBC’s efforts

“In the last couple of seasons, we had a weaker team, which resulted in the batting taking a dip, but we have a better team now.”

CBC Old Boys captain Casey Arnold, whose side’s chances of making it to the play-offs hung in the balance pending the very last encounter of the round-robin phase, much like last season, remained hopeful that they will finally make the play-off crack after missing out again.

Following a late successful resurgence to make the play-offs, Old Boys were just left with a single hurdle: their ultimate Top 6 showdown against Bedfordview at home.

Things did not go as planned for Arnold and company, who had defeated the likes of Benoni Northerns in Benoni to put themselves in qualifying contention. When D-Day arrived, the local side laid an egg following a poor start to their batting.

They never recovered and when they were finally all dismissed for 107, Arnold and co. knew the writing was on the wall.

The visitors toppled their total after 35.3 overs – eight less than Old Boys en route to what turned out to be a comfortable victory in the end – spelling the end of Old Boys’ season.

“We did well this year; losing in the final (the Bedfordview encounter), very proud of the effort,” said Arnold.

“We finished fourth in the league for two years in a row, so we are consistently improving. Disappointed we still have not managed to finish third.”

The skipper, who was one of Old Boys’ stand-out players this campaign – particularly in the batting front, also praised his teammates for his improved numbers this year off the willow.

“My first two years in the league, I came second and third in the run scorers list and had two really good seasons.
