Local child welfare commemorates World Aids Day
A candle was lit to pay tribute and to honour those who lost their battle to the illness.
Boksburg Child Welfare recently hosted an informative event to commemorate World Aids Day, which is celebrated on December 1.
The objective was to educate and empower the community that it is possible to live with HIV for many years by accepting your status, taking your medication and living a healthy lifestyle.
Members of the St Francis Care Centre, Villa Liza HIV/Aids support group and Love Life attended the event.
There were four speakers who discussed the importance of knowing your status, how vital it is to take medication, as well as living a healthy lifestyle. This refers to exercising, following a healthy diet and identifying a good support system.

One of the organisers, Eucha Mazibuko, described the event as a success.
“Our message to any person or family affected by or infected with HIV/Aids is do not give up hope. HIV was previously seen as a death sentence to many; however, with advanced treatment and by leading a healthy lifestyle many of our survivors are living positively for decades,” said Mazibuko.
“There are many organisations in Boksburg who can provide support and other information. We urge the public to make contact with us so they can be referred according to their needs.”

A wellness testing station was also set up outside the Boksburg Child Welfare building with the assistance of the St Francis Care Centre. The station was open to any member of the public who wanted to get tested for HIV/Aids, high blood pressure, diabetes and tuberculosis.
