Champions Rovers defeat Blues
The victory ensured that the visitors finish with an impressive 53 points from a possible 60, with only one defeat and two draws conceded in their allotted 20 league games.
ELFA u-17 League 1 champions Rovers ended their successful campaign on a high with a 2-1 win over league rivals Boksburg at the Boksburg City Stadium on Heritage Day.
The Blues’ stats were also impressive, highlighting the high level of competition between the top three, including Sporting, with the title race going down to the wire.
The Blues finished in third place behind Sporting with 42 points, while runners-up Sporting, who were pipped to the title at the end, settled for 49 points.
Rovers, taking nothing for granted, drew first blood with an early goal before Boksburg forward Zanda Linda equalised with his second goal in as many matches to force the encounter to go into the half-time break all square.
A desperate mistake in the second stanza from Boksburg saw a Blues defender attempt to clear the ball, but his effort bounced off a Rovers player and back into the Blues’ net, deceiving the Blues’ shot stopper in the process.
Sharing his thoughts on the encounter, Blues coach Ernest Seforo commented: “I really congratulate my defence and the goalkeeper for the crucial saves he made. It was a very interesting game to watch, both teams had a fighting spirit.
“I salute my boys and congratulate Rovers for winning the game.”
Luso Africa completed the top four.
