City plans to install security systems that detect cable tampering

The metro has urged the members of the community to report electricity related issues on 086 054 3000.

In the wake of cable theft hitting Boksburg, leaving residents fuming, the metro said it is now at an advanced stage in the supply chain management process to procure a modern technology security system that will deter cable theft.

According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, the City has been experiencing unprecedented electricity outages as a result of several factors.

“Among these is the overloading of the electricity network through the illegal bypass of electricity meters, illegal connections and unprecedented levels of cable theft.

“We will also be installing systems that detect tampering with electricity meters, which will assist in deterring illegal bypassing.

“We will also be rolling out mass awareness campaigns on illegal connection in an effort to mobilise the public to assist in identifying cable thieves in their communities.”

“If customers see any person in close proximity to our network with step-ladders they must report it to EMPD as our officials do not use a step-ladder but only cherry-pickers. The City officials also use marked vehicles,” Gadebe said.
