Celebrating 20 goals against Springs Old Boys

The game was part of a few games in-hand the Blues have had to play in recent weeks. They beat Luso Africa 3-0 on Women’s Day.

It was a game which will live long in the memory of both sets of teams for contrasting reasons.

The Boksburg Football Club u-17 side produced a performance of the ages to beat Springs Old Boys 20-1 in their ELFA League encounter at Prince George Park on August 11.

While the historic result would’ve left the Boksburg camp jubilant and the Springs camp with the desire to forget about it sooner rather than later, such hidings are hardly forgettable.

The scoreline was a record-breaking result in the u-17 league.

Proceedings were still manageable for the visitors after the first half, with the Blues leading 3-1 courtesy of Zanda Linda, Shane Radebe and Siviwe Mdlala.

Boksburg coach Ernest Seforo, however, went for the jugular despite being in the lead, introducing three forwards in the second stanza.

It was a risky move that paid dividends for the trainer as the lion’s share of ball possession his side enjoyed in the first half was suddenly converted into a frenzy of goals.

With their tails up and smelling blood, the Blues were brilliant and comfortable on the ball, forcing Old Boys to lose their defensive shape and making costly mistakes, especially at the back.

Boksburg punished.

The match quickly turned into a one-sided affair with the home side camping in their opponents’ half and Old Boys defending deeper and deeper.

Radebe and Mdlala, who finished with a brace and hat-trick respectively, and Linda were joined by Bandile Mazibuko (five goals), Motheo Masimola, Shiven Chetty, Thapelo Seforo (brace), Gabriel Cossa (brace); Sipho Matlhare, Langalihle Zwane and Kgothaso Gololo on the goal-scoring chart.

Blues mentor Seforo said: “I’m very happy about the huge improvement by the team. The parents’ support is amazing, they support whether we play at home or away.

“Players’ team work is of high grade, starting from training sessions to each game. We’re taking one game at a time and we approach each game with due respect, which makes a huge difference in the team.

“I’d like to thank the chairperson of Boksburg Football Club, Richard Masemola, for giving me the opportunity to coach the team, and his club committee for all the support they give to the team.”
