Church offers a platform for young talent in Villa Liza

Non-profit organisations (NPO) Siyanqoba and YAHAP also presented a talk which focused on teenage pregnancy and the importance of HIV testing.

Mercy Seat Family Fellowship (MSFF) had Villa Liza residents glued to their seats as they hosted an open mic session on June 17 at Villa Liza Secondary School.

The church, which has been in existence for five years now, brought together both young and old to expose them to numerous performances. Open Mic, an event hosted each year by MSFF offers the youth from Villa Liza and surrounding areas an opportunity to showcase their talent.

The event had about 100 attendees cheering as performances unfolded, which included stunning performances of poetry, dance, singing and acting. The event was hosted with the intent to keep children off the streets.

Trevor Molefe, a pastor at MSFF, said the event was a success and similar events are yet to take place.

“The turnout was amazing, people kept coming as the event was underway. I commend the youth that took time out to entertain us with their different talents. As a congregation, we will have more similar events that acknowledge our youth,” he said.

Morongoe Dikgale, a church committee member, commended those who attended.

“We are grateful for those who came through. As a church, we encourage the youth to take part in such activities to get them active. This will curb societal issues such as unexpected pregnancy and substance abuse,” said Dikgale.

Peer counsellor at Siyanqoba Sinenhlanhla Buthelezi commented: “Youngsters should also be made aware that HIV and Aids exists and should be keen on checking their status regularly.”
