Tommy Gun not yet done and dusted

Oosthuizen’s last outing was in Russia against rising cruiserweight prospect Alexey Egorov earlier this year.

The once prevalent figure in South African boxing circles, Tommy Oosthuizen, is still on course to rise his stock in the boxing fraternity.

The man nicknamed ‘Tommy Gun’, who was at the apex of his powers when he held the IBO super middleweight title some seven years ago, has since jumped to heavier divisions, first the light heavyweight and now the cruiserweight.

Although he’s held his own in the latter divisions thanks to his undeniable talent, his performances have been compromised by the moves, accompanied by other out-of-the ring issues.

He has been 1-2 from 2017, losing to Igor Michalkin and exchanging wins with Thabiso Mchunu.

When the Advertiser recently paid a visit to the Hammer Gym where Oosthuizen is kept on his toes by no-nonsense trainer Harold Volbrecht, the Advertiser learnt that there had been a mutual agreement between trainer and boxer that Oosthuizen is better off lighter rather than heavy.

“He wants to go down to light heavyweight,” confirmed Volbrecht.

“When I feel that he’s ready, I’ll put in a challenge for the SA light heavyweight title.”
