Owls still within a shout of reaching their goal

Following last week’s bye weekend, the Owls return home this weekend (June 22) in a crucial encounter against Tuine, who sit one position above the Owls in fifth spot.

TW Boksburg Rugby Club travelled to Vereeniging for their Volcano Super Trophy encounter to take on the home side well aware that anything short of a clinical display would likely result in a loss against a formidable Vereeniging outfit on June 8.

Following their loss to Brakpan at Prince George Park a fortnight ago, Boksburg coach Francois Erasmus’ attention had already switched to their journey to Vereeniging with the straightforward mentor admitting that the challenge ahead would be difficult – as usual, considering the opponent.

The Owls’ performance however, although not perfect, was anything but poor as they crossed the whitewash three times courtesy of star centre Damian Diedericks, Brandon Swart and Adriaan van der Nest in the 32-17 defeat.

Erasmus also made it clear at the start of the campaign that the Prince George Park camp want to make the play-offs in what is one of the toughest competitions the club has been a part of in recent years.

And despite a string of unfavourable results, the local side is still within a shout of reaching their goal.

After six outings and two wins, Boksburg sit sixth in the 10-team log, just two positions and four points out of the play-off picture.

The two sides are separated by three points but Tuine have a game in hand – which is more reason why the margin for error is getting thinner by the game for Erasmus and his team.

Quizzed on the Vereeniging game, Owls scrum-half and skipper Johan Labuschagne said: “The score doesn’t do justice to the game. Everyone who was there will tell you they were on the edge of their seats right until the end.

“We had a chance late in the game to equalise when Danie [Schultz] intercepted the ball and had a 60m run before getting tackled on the try line and they got a penalty. So yeah, it was a nerve wrecking yet great game.”

Owls number 10 Henry Pike added his team’s extra points from a single conversion.
