Sentenced to prison for having sex with dog

The dog in question was taken to the SPCA where it underwent routine medical examination including sterilisation, before it was taken back to its owner.

A 23-year-old man was recently sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.

This came after witnesses reportedly caught Venesh Smith, of Reiger Park, having asexual intercourse with the dog, called Brownie, on December 3, last year.

The court heard that it was not the first time witnesses caught the accused red-handed having sexual intercourse with the dog.

Witnesses reported the incident labelled as an ‘abomination’ to the dog owner who then alerted the police and SPCA. The accused was later arrested and charged with bestiality.

The man who makes a living from washing people’s cars could not afford to pay bail, and as a result he remained in custody until the case was finalised on May 14.

According to court records, the complainant had been all along suspecting that something was amiss as the dog stomach was dilating day by day.

Boksburg SPCA manager Maggie Mudd confirmed that the dog was pregnant when the organisation came to its rescue. Although Mudd was not pleased with the suspended sentence handed to the convicted animal abuser, she stated that the conviction and the criminal record against the accused name shows that the court takes animal cruelty very serious.

“What the man did is disgusting. If this guy had the audacity to do something like this to an animal, imagine what he can do to a child.”

Mudd further mentioned that such crimes appear to be prevalent in Boksburg, as there are other cases that are still pending in court.

Smith pleaded guilty and found guilty to the crime. His sentence was wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not found guilty of bestiality within the five-year period.

Magistrate Valencia Josias presided and prosecutor Siyabonga Futshana represented the state.
