United lose against Rhinos in Volcano Super Cup match
East Rand United opened their Volcano Super Cup campaign with a 43-37 loss to Quins-Bobbies Rugby (QBR) Club at Loftus Versfeld on April 27.
East Rand United suffered another defeat in their Volcano Super Cup campaign at the hands of Northam Rhinos at the Northam Mines Rugby Fields in Limpopo on May 11.
The hosts took the spoils with 29-21 after trailing 12-14 at the half-time break.
Returning East Rand United captain Jonathan Botha scored two of United’s three tries with utility backline player Tiaan Ramat scoring the other five-pointer.
United kicker Cameron Rooi converted two tries with Cameron Lentoor slotting over the other.
New United coach Alvandre Maart continued with his shuffling of his starting XV as he seeks to find his strongest starting line-up.
Botha, who’s been interchanged between hooker and openside flank, playing the majority of his recent rugby in the front row, was deployed in the flank position for the tie, a birth his coach hinted is his best.
There was another change in the loose forward department with the return of stalwart Calvin Jantjies, who slotted in at number eight.
In the backline, the familiar face within United ranks of Dustin Losch returned to the United starting team to fill the big shoes of Tiaan Ramat, who was deployed in the right wing position.
Other high profile changes saw the introduction of team kicker Rooi in the fly-half position in place of Clayton Gindan.
A collection of silly mistakes combined with the unfamiliar playing conditions were a definite factor in United’s latest loss in the Volcano Super Cup, but the Reiger Park outfit can look up to the losing margins having closed drastically compared to last year.
