Taking hands to conserve water
Water Awareness Week was held during March with the theme “Leaving no one behind, water for all”.
The Birchwood Hotel hosted the seventh consecutive Water Week Awareness Day on April 10, which aims to focus attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
The event was hosted in partnership with the Department of Water and Sanitation, Department of Education and the City of Ekurhuleni.
Katekani Chawuke from the Department of Water and Sanitation said water scarcity is recognised as a global problem, with demand for water projected to exceed supply by 40 per cent by 2030. By the same year, half the world’s population will be living with drought.

“Everybody should celebrate Water Week. People should work together to save water. It is very important to close the tap when you brush your teeth. People should also use the shower instead of taking a bath. Water is precious,” said Chawuke.
The following schools participated in the event: Pinegrove Primary, Thembalethu Primary, Gugulesizwe Primary, Magauelagase Primary, Katlehong High, Tsakane High, Erasmus Moraneng High, Tswelolepe High and F.S. Mamcele High.

Learners were given topics to research and prepared presentations about how to preserve water. This initiative will enhance the student’s knowledge of water conservation, sanitation, ecology and waste management.
The Birchwood Hotel Ever Green team encourages everyone in South Africa to make their own pledge for water in their daily lives.
