Sponsors needed to help underprivileged children

Matthew Ukhozi Foundation day-care centre looks after more than 150 children.

The Reiger Park-based under-resourced Matthew Ukhozi Foundation (MUF) day-care centre desperately needs a sponsor to help build ablution facilities and water connections on the bulk line water supply.

The vast majority of them are from poor families and households headed by single parents or grandparents.

Staff and children, aged nine months to five years, are sharing two chemical toilets. The rented property, Agape Healing Ministries, does not have access to clean and safe drinking water.

According to the deputy principal, Cintricia Coetzee, MUF is a non-profit organisation that was formed in 2013 by Elna Khoza, who now serves as the principal.

“Working parents, who can afford to contribute something towards the cost of running the centre, pay between R200 and R370 per month, and that money is spent on food, children’s transport, staff salaries, rent and other necessities,” said Coetzee.

“Our main objective is taking care of the less privileged children and prepare them for the future. We have taken up the role of parenting, preventing juvenile delinquency and caring for children from less fortunate families.

“We keep children off the dangerous streets, give them the love and care they deserve and give them the best education and healthcare,” said Coetzee.

Coetzee said it would be nice to also have businesses coming along to help the children with stationery and food.

Although the centre is registered as an NPO with qualified early childhood development teachers and meets all the requirements to take care of children, it has so far been unable to apply for funding from the Department of Social Development because it still needs to meet certain criteria relating to the leased property.

Any individual or organisation interested in sponsoring the centre may contact Cintricia Coetzee on 065 816 4563 or Elna Khoza on 072 145 0882.
