Visually impaired local model wins beauty crown
Carina will be volunteering at two charity organisations per month. Her first project will be to collect stationery for needy children in Mozambique.
Blind model Carina James (24) from Boksburg was overwhelmed after winning the Miss Universal South Africa title of Pageants SA recently.
Starting from March 19, Carina was hard at work as one of the finalists.
During the week, judges kept a secret eye on the entrants to judge the finalists’ personalities.
Carina had to rehearse casual and evening ramp walking, which she found challenging because of her lack of sight. She also had to do interviews.
Carina was also crowned Best Ramp Model and Miss Congeniality and won the Face of South Africa and Public Choice Award.
“What a week it has been. It still hasn’t sunk in that I have received the title of Miss Universal. It is an incredible feeling. I am so honoured. This title gives me a chance to change the views of people with disabilities,” said Carina, who is a model at Vogue Catwalk Models.
“I would like to thank my family, friends and everyone who helped and voted for me. I definitely couldn’t have done this on my own.
“I would also like to give a special thanks to Pageants SA, Carolyn and Nico Botha, my assistant Daleen Blignaut, Sorbet Group, Daniel Asiwe, Corrie Myburgh, and Alicia Pereira from Alicious Beauty SA for this amazing opportunity.”
She will be spending Easter at a children’s home on the East Rand.
She has a soft spot for animals and would also like to help organisations such as the SPCA.
