Oosthuizen outgunned in Russia
Tommy Oosthuizen, who’s fallen to a rather disappointing loss in his standards, has seen his recent record deteriorate to 1-3 since his awaited return to the squared circle.
Up-and-coming Russian cruiserweight pugilist Alexey Egorov (27) earned a deserved and big unanimous decision victory in Russia on March 23 when he stopped Tommy Oosthuizen (30) after 10 rounds.
The home town boy, who was the aggressor in most parts of the bout, also acquired the vacant IBF International title in the process and improved his young but bright pro record to 8-0; 6 KOs.
The three judges scored it 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92.
The lanky South African southpaw adopted a slower and more patient start and was never allowed to completely get out of the starting blocks by the more energetic Egorov.
He benefited by successfully landing damaging body shots, defeating Oosthuizen’s rope-a-dope tactics early on. While the Russian proved troublesome in the first half of the fight, Oosthuizen’s counterstrikes mostly did little to no damage.
The bout came to life in its latter stages as Oosthuizen opened up more, sensing an opportunity as Egorov visibly struggled to maintain the same tempo he showed in the early rounds.
The Russian’s will, however, helped him stay in the fight as he cut Oosthuizen over his forehead, and also inflicting a bust on the South African’s nose.
With either puncher refusing to lose, they continued to exchange strikes as the clash petered out.
Oosthuizen fell to 28-3-2; 16.
