Sixteen injured in train accident at Elandsfontein station

Circumstances leading up to the derailment is at this stage unknown.

Netcare responded to a train derailment at the Elandsfontein train station off Jet Park Road in Boksburg yesterday, March 12.

According to Shawn Herbst, media liaison officer Netcare Limited, on arrival paramedics assessed the scene and found that three carriages of a train had derailed injuring sixteen patients.

“All the injured were occupants of the train and sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate,” said Herbst.

“Once treated and stabilized all the patients were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further treatment.”

Following this latest accident involving the railway, the DA has called n the Rail Safety Regulator to investigate the cause of the train derailment at Elandsfontein train.

“In addition, the Rail Safety Regulator must publish the findings of all Metrorail train accidents in Gauteng, which are becoming far too common, and report whether the recommendations have been implemented,” said Solly Msimanga, DA Gauteng Premier candidate.

“This yet another blight on PRASA and the failing ANC’s ability to effectively manage and maintain train infrastructure which many rely on to access jobs and opportunities.

“For far too long, the government has neglected rail safety and the safety of passengers. The Metrorail trains are in a state of disrepair due to a lack of proper consistent maintenance.

“The government is putting commuters’ lives at risk on a daily basis and is not in a position to provide safe and reliable public transport to the residents of Gauteng.”
