Lawrence Sephaka at the helm of Alberton Rugby Club

Newly elected chairperson of the Alberton Rugby Club Lawrence Sephaka says: “It’s certainly going to be an exciting journey."

Former Reiger Park Springbok prop Lawrence Sephaka has been appointed as the new chairperson of A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club.

Sephaka said: “It’s certainly going to be an exciting journey. The club has an inclusive coaching structure that involves all the coaches, so all the coaches are on the same page.

“Different styles of coaching by individuals is also promoted.

“The synergy just helps the progression of the players’ transition to the first team. As the flagship team, it would be advisable not to forget that every team is required to perform at their best.”

Sephaka, who also starred for Super Rugby finalists today known as the Emirates Lions, expressed his delight at the involvement of women in the game.

“One of the exciting things as well is the involvement of women in this game. This year we have a women’s team competing; as you know, transformation and opening up the game to all community members.

“We are moving away from the notion that rugby is a man’s game. We’re all exposed to women playing the game in all levels so it’s good to start the trend at an amateur level. So there’s a lot to be excited about in 2019.”

The 24-time capped Bok is no foreign to the club, which he’s been serving as a ruck and scrum coach before his latest promotion to club chairperson.

Asked on the appointment in the chairperson’s position, club manager Rory Lategan welcomed the promotion.

“Lawrence is quite well known around the club, he’s added a lot of value in his time as ruck and scrum coach so we’re very excited.”

It’s exciting times indeed for the club, which saw all of its u-19, u-21 and second team sides win their respective leagues last season.

The senior side, which played in the second division Baily League, also gained promotion to the Pirates Grand Challenge League.
