Stephan Nel resigns as head coach of East Rand United

United’s first test of the year is said to come with two friendlies against fellow Gold Cup participants, including Springs.

East Rand United (ERU) head coach Stephan Nel has stepped down from his post, citing “it’s time for someone else to take the team further”.

And by the looks of things, that someone else is former United captain and scrum half Alvandré Maart – the backline coach at the Valke Rugby Union.

Nel steps down following a widely successful tenure with the Reiger Park outfit, but was void of silverware.

He immediately made an impact after replacing his predecessor, Derrick Sampson, by taking United to two consecutive winnable Valke Peregrine League finals against Vereeniging and Springs respectively, but fell agonisingly short on both occasions.

The Advertiser recently learned about the news, but Nel confirmed he handed in his resignation at the end of last season.

He will, however, be staying with the club and will coach the u-20 side this season.

United chairperson Marius de Vos said: “The result of the final match between us and Springs led to a whole range of changes in the coaching management.

“Stephan has resigned as head coach for obvious reasons.

“We held a management meeting on December 10 and Alvandré Maart, Collin Lloyd, Monde Patela and Sean Plaatjies were appointed as coaches for the Gold Cup preparations.

“Alvandré has shown interest in coaching our first team. He has tremendous experience as a coach with a level-three coaching qualification.”

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) Gold Cup, which United will be involved in, will run between March 9 and April 14.

The dates for the friendlies are yet to be confirmed. – @SabeloBoksburg
