Javelin thrower smashes national record
Van der Linden will now graduate to the heavier 700g javelin next year.
When the Advertiser met up with javelin rising star Armant van der Linden in October, he dared to end what has been a decorated year for him on a high note.
At the time he was preparing for his final event of the year, the interprovincial championships,
He represented Central Gauteng at the tournament which took place at the Puk McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom on November 24.
The Hoërskool Garsfontein star, who lives in Boksburg, produced a throw of 72.78m for boys u-15, setting a personal best and a new national club record which convincingly eliminated the previous record of 64.96m.
“I was really excited about the championship and knew something great was going to happen,” said van der Linden.
Van der Linden’s 2018 list of achievements also includes a Gauteng schools gold medal, a 63.93m record at another meeting in Sasolburg earlier this year, a SA schools bronze, a Noordvaal division B gold, a Naboomspruit Top 10 gold which accompanied his then personal best throw of 67.73m, a King Price flash meeting gold and a Top 30 gold in Potchefstroom.
“I am working to throw a 70m average with the heavier javelin, but a 75m plus would be great for me.”
