The 43-year-old woman who poured boiling water over her boyfriend has been sentenced to 12 months’ correctional supervision in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
Fikelephi Constance Mthethwa pleaded guilty and was found guilty to the crime on October 22 and sentenced on November 26.
Mthethwa assaulted Erick Dlangamandla by throwing boiling water containing cooking oil over the victim while lying on a bed in July.
Dlangamandla was admitted to hospital with serious burns on different parts of his body, including the chest, stomach, both arms and left hand.
Police arrested the woman a short while later and charged her with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (assault GBH).
The accused, said to have confessed in court to having carried out the atrocity, said she understands that her conduct was wrong and that she did it out of anger.
The girlfriend further stated that Dlangamandla was her boyfriend and they were living together, but she wanted him out of her apartment as she believed he was cheating on her with another woman.
The court heard that Mthethwa boiled the water using an electric bucket urn as she wanted to steam her body. At that moment her boyfriend apparently started to argue with her, using vulgar language. That made Mthethwa really angry. She grabbed the bucket filled with boiling water and oil and threw it on the victim.
The accused has no previous conviction.
The conditions of her 12-month correctional supervision are: she must do 16 hours of community service per month; placed under house detention; seeks employment, participates in treatment, development and support programmes; participate in mediation between victim and offender; restricted to the magisterial district of Boksburg, remains resident at the same fixed address for the duration of the sentence; she may not use any alcohol or drugs other than those prescribed by a physician; she may not commit any criminal offence; and she is subjected to monitoring as a high-risk offender by correctional services.
Magistrate Jurg Vivier presided and prosecutor Ntombi Mbonani represented the state.
