CBC ease past Kwa-Thema

The home side could only manage a mere total of 109 runs following their toss win – a total CBC front man Mark Pearse wasted little time eating into.

A disastrous showing behind the crease by home side Kwa-Thema allowed visitors CBC Old Boys to canter to a seven-wicket bonus point triumph in the season’s maiden game at the Prince Thethe Oval on Sunday, October 7.

It could’ve been worse for Kwa-Thema, but tail-ender Mazamo Mboqo’s shift of 25 runs put his side’s total into the hundreds. He also finished as his side’s top scorer as the hosts struggled throughout their innings – with no one else managing to reach the 20-run mark.

The visitors’ impressive bowling attack didn’t help the hosts’ cause either. Led by captain Casey Arnold, who took a whopping four wickets, the Old Boys bowlers laid a perfect platform for their batsmen to freely express themselves in what was to follow.

Arnold was helped by trio Craig Parker, Devon Botha and Carlton Mdluli, who all took a brace of wickets apiece as a hapless Kwa-Thema were forced to defend a vulnerable total.

During their batting innings, Old Boys lost just three wickets, including Arnold, Sherwyn Pillay and Dylan Bennie, with the experienced triumvirate exiting for a disappointing six, one and eight respectively.

It mattered little, however, with Pearse’s unbeaten 74 and Ryno van der Merwe’s 13 not-out seeing the local side collect maximum points.
