The Ekurhuleni metro has shed some light on why the Atlasville dumpsite was closed for nearly a week from July 1 leaving residents with nowhere else to dump their refuse.
According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, they are aware and regret the fact that the mini-disposal sites in the Southern and Eastern regions of Ekurhuleni have not been serviced since July 1.
“This was caused by delays in the administrative process that the metro is obliged to follow when appointing new contractors.
“The metro did, however, decide to keep the gates to the sites open to prevent illegal dumping outside the premises or in alternative spots in the immediate vicinity.
“The appointment of contractors to service, manage and maintain the sites has been finalised and the sites can be operational any time.”
Ward 23 councillor André du Plessis said the Atlasville dumpsite is under construction for upgrading and it should be completed by end of August.
