BAC stars shine at 93rd Comrades

A total of 72 runners donning the blue and white-striped vest of BAC completed the race – with 63 finishing.

Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) quartet Wiehan and Werner van der Berg, Wynand Strydom and Byron Jones flew the club’s flag the highest at the Comrades Marathon in KwaZulu-Natal on June 10.

The four ran sub seven hours, 30 minutes to earn the prestigious silver medal.

Werner, Strydom and Jones, who normally star for BAC at the ultramarathon event, matched their achievements from last year’s ‘up’ run as they also won silver then.

Jabulani Gumede agonisingly missed the silver after finishing in seven hours, 31 minutes and one second.

Top man: Wiehan van der Berg stopped the time at 07:03:36.Following the silver medalists were the Bill Rowan medal winners, with the local club producing 12 members for that class.

Furthermore, there were 36 bronze medal winners and 11 Vic Clapham medal winners.

Bongmusa Mthembu became the second South African to win the Comrades twice in a row after race icon Bruce Fordyce.

It was Mthembu’s third Comrades win with his first coming in 2014. He stopped the clock in an impressive five hours, 26 minutes and 34 seconds ahead of runner-up Joseph Mphuti.

Ann Ashworth completed South Africa’s dominance in this year’s race when she became the first lady to cross the line in six hours, 10 minutes and four seconds in a debut win.

When all was said and done, there were seven South Africans in the men’s top 10 and six in the ladies’ top 10.
