Freeway Park’s upcoming golf star keeps in the swing of success
The young golfer has already travelled to England, USA, Scotland and Malaysia, and hoping to make the Italy squad in October.
Golf RSA Juniors star Casey Jarvis (14) had a chat with the Advertiser amid his unbeaten run he enjoyed with his teammates to blitz to a fourth win in the SA Challenge Cup after beating Western Province.
The Freeway Park player shares information about his favourite player, his hidden talents and the best golf course he’s played on, among other topics.
The Advertiser asked:
How and when did your career begin?
I started hitting balls at the age of two. I started competing when I was six when I also started playing monthly tournaments at SA Kids Golf.
What do you love most about the sport?
It’s fun, good competition and I enjoy making friends worldwide.
What are your biggest achievements in the sport?
Winning major overseas tournaments like the European Junior World Championship and the Optimist World Junior Championship consecutively, as well as the British Boy u-14 Championship. I’ve also won the SA Boys u-13 and SA Boys u-15 tournaments in South Africa. I was also selected to play in the IPT Open Team for my Union at the age of 14.
Does the talent for the sport run in the family?
My dad plays golf socially and is actually quite good but he never took it up seriously.
How far do you want to go with the sport?
My dream is to become a professional golfer one day.
How often do you practise?
I practise every day for about two-and-a-half hours and usually play tournaments or competitions over the weekend.
How else do you keep your golfing skills sharp?
Practise hard, work on my weaknesses.
How do you balance your lifestyle with golf taking so much of your time?
Most of my friends play golf anyway so we usually have fun after tournaments. I do enjoy going to the movies on occasion. Mom is quite strict with me doing well at school too so I need to make sure that my grades are good. My school is very supportive of me and I am blessed to be able to balance and juggle my lifestyle quite nicely.
Which school do you go to and which primary school did you go to?
I went to Parkrand Primary School where I was chosen as the head boy. I currently attend Edu Zone Centre based in Benoni. It is a small centre where most of the learners are golfers or sportsmen wanting to pursue their talent into something greater. The principal and teachers are wonderful and I am extremely happy.
What do you wish to study after secondary school?
I’d like to do a sports management course.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I was a really good soccer player too. I enjoy all ball-sport games.
What’s your favourite sport to watch and what team do you support in that particular sport?
Golf would be my first, soccer would be my second and my team is Man United.
Who is your favourite golfer and why?
Tiger Woods. He’s my inspiration, he never gives up.
What gets under your skin?
Players that cheat.
How many countries have you been to?
Four – England, USA, Scotland and Malaysia, and hoping to make the Italy squad in October.
What’s the best golf course you’ve ever played on and why?
Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in England, there is so much history behind it.
What’s the hardest thing about golf in your opinion?
Controlling my temper.
What’s your favourite quote?
“Never give up.”
What’s your favourite meal?
Chicken salad.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Watch movies, play PlayStation.
Which country have you enjoyed playing in the most in your career and why?
Scotland because the courses are challenging and my game grows when playing on tougher courses.
