ERPM golf club skipper talks about the sport, the course and his duties

The golf course is this celebrating a rich heritage of the 115th years.

ERPM Golf Club captain Nick Alberts is the latest sporting personality to chat to the Advertiser.

The Advertiser asked:

When did you become captain?

In 2016.

Where are you from?

Boksburg.

Under which capacity do you play golf in?

Just for the fun and a little competition.

What makes golf a good sport, in your opinion?

When playing golf, there is no one else to blame; it’s all on you. It teaches patience and humility. No one will get the better of golf, no one.

What makes the ERPM Golf Course one of the best around?

ERPM is a good old traditional parklands layout; it is not the longest course but has a great layout. If you don’t get the ball in the right place off the tee, the ‘Old Girl’ will get you.

What’s your favourite book?

Clive Cussler series of books.

What’s your favourite quote?

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” – Mark Twain.

Who’s your favourite local golf player of all time, and why?

To be honest, I don’t have a favourite local player.

Who’s your favourite international golf player of all time, and why?

Henrik Stenson. He can make golf really easy some days.

This year is the course’s 115th anniversary. Any celebration plans?

I would like to host a festival of golf week in the summer to celebrate and commemorate the 115th anniversary of a ‘Grand Old Lady’.

The old school building on the golf course.

What are the plans for Boksburg’s first ever school which lies on the course?

It would be great to have it officially recognised by one of the historical societies and then get some money together and do some restoration. Then, possibly a historically themed coffee shop or restaurant. Something like that.

The course has obviously been hit with a greens mishap – are there any plans in place to better the course and prevent such from happening again?

It was an unfortunate accident but we have been working extremely hard in the last two months to rebuild and rehabilitate the greens, and thanks to some luck, lots of help from above and from great friends in the golf course industry.

I think we are just about back on track to provide our members and visitors the quality product they deserve. There were definitely some very hard lessons learnt by all during the testing time.

What duties apply to a club captain?

I think every captain would see the role differently, but for me it is important to ensure that ERPM is a place that members and visitors must want to come to feel comfortable, be at home, feel safe and of course, play on a great golf course.

What’s your favourite meal?

Beef stroganoff and a glass of red wine.

Where did you grow up?

Freeway Park. – @SabeloBoksburg
