Terrified dog tied to tree behind SPCA

The dog had to be eventually euthanised as he was deemed to be a fear biter.

Boksburg SPCA employees recently found a young male German shepherd fastened to a tree with wire in the veld behind the SPCA.

According to SPCA manager Maggie Mudd, the gate that leads to the veld is kept locked.

“It is only opened when staff disposes of the carcasses of the animals that have been humanely euthanased in the municipal skip that is kept there.

“Because of this we know that the dog had not been there longer than 24 hours, as it was not there the previous day,” Mudd said.

The dog was extremely frightened and staff battled to free it or even pick it up using a blanket.

They eventually used a wire basket to remove the dog.

The German shepherd fastened to a tree behind the SPCA.

“It was placed in one of our kennels and we tried to make the dog less fearful,” Mudd explained.

“Unfortunately, despite this, the dog remained petrified and very stressed by the confinement and then proceeded to become aggressive towards anyone trying to make friends with him.

“He would growl and make short charges towards the kennel cleaner, making cleaning his kennel daily a trial for him and the staff member.

“However, if anyone tried to approach him he would retreat to the back of the kennel and urinate in fear.”

A decision was taken to humanely euthanise the dog as it was not improving in any way.

“This would have been a difficult dog to home,” Mudd said.

Mudd reminds the public that abandonment of an animal is an offence under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 Section 1(1)(p).

Anyone with information about the dog that was tied to the tree should contact the SPCA on 011 916 5906/7.
