ERU open league campaign stumbles in defeat

It was the last thing the local outfit needed as they came in the match at the back of a close 32-38 defeat to Naka Bulls in the Carlton League.

East Rand United was dealt an early setback in their hunt for possible end-of-season honours when they went down 22-34 to Springs on March 28 at Olympia Park.

The half-time score was 20-10 to the hosts.

And it’s not about to get any easier for Stephan Nel’s men with their next match being the Boksburg derby against next-door rivals TW Boksburg Rugby Club at Prince George Park on Saturday (April 14).

Versatile backline player Jackie Jonkers’ two tries were accompanied by outside centre Cameron Rooi’s try, two conversions and a single penalty.

It was a tough trip to Olympia Park for United with the reserve side offering the only silver lining as they kept the hosts scoreless in a 26-0 beating.

United’s u-21s just went down in a 24-28 defeat.
