Boksburg senior rugby team welcomes new coach
Coach supports the Stormers and views Duane Vermeulen as his favourite pro rugby player
The Advertiser recently caught up with respected coach Francois Erasmus, who has been appointed new head coach of the Boksburg Rugby Club senior team.
Erasmus (56) succeeds Marcell Fourie, who opted to step down after two years at the helm.
He has left his position as the head coach of the mighty Brakpan Rugby Club senior team whose members he led between 2011 and 2016, having previously also coached the same team between 2006 and 2008.
He was also a Valke Craven Week coach between 2007 and 2008.
- Is this your first time coaching Boksburg?
Yes. I played for Boksburg in the 1988-1989 seasons.
- What’s your goal for the upcoming season?
To create a very enjoyable environment for the players, to be competitive as a team and to reach the play-offs.
- Which other teams have you coached?
Brakpan (2006-2008, 2011-2016); Valke Craven Week (2007-2008); HTS Springs (2000-2003); Hoërskool Hugenote (2004-2007); Hoërskool EG Jansen (2008); Hoërskool Marais Viljoen (2009-2012)
- What are you looking to bring to the First team?
Consistency, to be competitive and to enjoy the game.
- Why did you decide to coach Boksburg?
I enjoy the environment. I still have friends here and it’s a new challenge for me.
- How long will you be coaching Boksburg?
Initially, only for this season.
- When did you officially sign the contract?
In November last year.
- What’s your preferred game plan?
I prefer a ball-in-hand game plan and an attacking style of rugby.
- Where were you born and bred?
In Florida on the West Rand. I went to school at Hoërskool Monument, in Krugersdorp.
- What are your philosophies within the game?
To empower the players, to enhance their skill level and to encourage them to back their decision-making and not to fear failure.
- Did you come with your own managerial team?
I have brought Johan Matthysen in as forward coach and Lenny Malan as the tactical coach.
- What can you promise Boksburg Rugby Club fans?
We are going to play an attractive brand of rugby and do everything in our power to reach the play-offs.
- Which professional team do you support?
The Stormers
- Who’s your favourite pro rugby player and why?
Duane Vermeulen. He is a very inspirational and competitive player and an excellent leader. – @SabeloBoksburg
