Old Boys fall in crushing 120-run loss

CBC Old Boys captain Casey Arnold cautioned that it was too early to get excited following their second consecutive maximum points victory against Tembisa on October 29.

At the time, CBC were faced with three ‘very difficult’ fixtures following the Tembisa clash.

Arnold was proved correct when the CBC outfit suffered a 120-run loss at home over the weekend to one of the season’s title favourites, Alberton.

The game proved tough for the newly assembled home XI as the visitors raced to 327/6 runs, condemning the hosts to a 120-run loss.

Alberton captain Juandre Potgieter was the star of the day, leading from the front with 93 not out to whet the visitors’ appetite for a big total.

It was always going to be a tough chase for Arnold and co., with Potgieter looking unbeatable and his teammates also firing.

Top-order hitter Matthew Arnold (67) and Eben Koekemoer (58) both joined their skipper in slashing the half-ton mark, while JC Maritz fell just short of making it four 50s from four different batsmen for his side as he walked off having scored 45.

Maritz also took two wickets in his 10 overs of bowling to finish with 2/28 including one maiden.

AD Gagiano, meanwhile, all but toppled half of CBCs batting arsenal with his 4/44 in 10 overs.

Following Dylan Bennie and skipper Arnold’s early walks back to the stands in the game’s second innings, Mark Pearse and Sherwin Pillay continued the game’s high scoring in a bid to make their side’s slim chance count.

The duo came to the party with a combined score of 138, with Pearse’s 71 just four more than Pillay’s total.

It wasn’t the worst showing by the home side – the visitors simply proved too good on the day. – @SabeloBoksburg
