Cricket: Johnson, Meade set up Boksburg’s demise
An equally impressive performance with ball and bat by JP Meade and a big knock by teammate Andre Johnson led United to a crushing 88-run win over Boksburg, at Prince George Park, on Sunday, October 29.
Meade (48) and Johnson (74) scored 122 runs between them to propel their side to the comfortable win in the Eastern Cricket Premier League encounter.
Having been sent to bat first, the visitors produced a solid beginning to their innings behind the crease that would eventually prove important towards their challenging total of 243, despite losing Rynardt de Lange and Peter Truwick for ducks.
Not even Boksburg’s John Haywood’s heroics with the leather (5/28; one maiden) could stop the United juggernaut.
Former CBC Old Boys batsman Wickus Germishuizen also deserves mention for his innings with the bat, with his score of 43 helping put his side in a good place.
To help his side defend the score against the hosts, Meade took a hat-trick of wickets – finishing with 3/37, including one maiden.
De Lange also produced a single maiden as United’s bowlers slowly strangled the home side’s batting front. He ended with 2/38 in his allotted 10 bowling overs.
“We just didn’t do the basics right and it put us under a lot of unnecessary pressure,” lamented Boksburg skipper Adam Forbes.
“Credit must go to United, though. Their bowlers did a great job in defending the score.”
It wasn’t the best of days at the office for the skipper, with his dismissal for naught proving to have a knock-on effect in the host’s chase.
Ahkter Rasul (62) also produced an inspiring knock, with Chris Opperman adding 35, but the hosts had no other answers following their dismissals.
The Prince George Park outfit managed to accumulate 155 in 40 overs as the visitors walked away with a well-deserved win. – @SabeloBoksburg
