A break point for St Dominic’s tennis players at Sun City

Ten very excited and nervous girls of the St Dominic's Catholic School for Girls boarded the bus to go and compete in the annual Sun City Tennis Tournament on August 28.

For the very first time, St Dominic’s decided to send two teams to the tournament and both teams did the school proud, on and off the tennis court.

“In the gruelling week that followed, the girls played many long games every single day, sometimes beginning play before sunrise or finishing their last game after sunset,” said Taylor Evans, tennis vice captain for 2017.

“The girls played with all their heart and soul and never gave up on court, no matter how tired they were from the previous day, or how many blisters and sores they were nursing on their hands and feet.

“One afternoon, the girls even played two sets of matches non-stop for over seven hours with them coming off from a two-hour match and going straight on to another.

“Despite this, the teams played extremely well, won many matches and learned a great deal from those that they lost.

“The time not spent on the courts was used to get to know other schools and the St Dominic’s girls made new friends and reunited with friends they had made at the tournament last year.

“The girls returned home on September 1, covered in blisters and sporting prominent ‘sock tans’, feeling very happy with how they had played and what they had achieved.

“I am very proud of all of you and I wish you luck for next year! Thank you, ladies, for making my last Sun City tournament such an amazing experience.”
