Tommy Gun once again wears a title belt

Thomas ‘Tommy Gun’ Oosthuizen made it 16 knockouts in 27 wins as he beat Said Mbelwa for the vacant ABU South African light heavyweight title at Carnival City on Friday evening, April 28.

Oosthuizen, 29, unsurprisingly the biggest draw on the bill, made an appearance in a local ring after a lengthy lay-off.

He did not disappoint as he dismissed the challenge from the 39-year-old Tanzania international with his hand speed that 27 fighters have failed to deal with to date.

Mbelwa dropped to 39-23-5; 5, while the champion’s unbeaten record improved to 27-0-2; 16.

The tournament, dubbed the Big Top Beat Down, was part of the newly launched pan-African boxing series.

It was initially scheduled to feature pugilists from nine African countries but flight complications experienced by a handful of boxers forced the organisers to reshuffle the bill.
