T20 cricket: Old Boys, Boksburg fall short

Kempton Park and CBC Old Boys did battle in a semi-final tie of the Eastern Cricket T20 tournament at CBC and it was the visitors who claimed the all-important win to advance to the finals.

Kempton showed better composure with bat in-hand during the January 29 clash and their 118 total was enough to set up a meeting against Benoni Northerns, who defeated Alberton on the day’s other semi-final.

Meanwhile, Old Boys neighbours the Boksburg Cricket Club were dumped out in an away game by Alberton in the earlier stages of the competition.

Captain Darryl Carmody and his side put up 164 runs in their allotted overs, with Matthew Arnold top-scoring with an impressive 47, a score that would prove to be too much for the local side.

Boksburg skipper John Haywood enjoyed a phenomenal bowling performance, taking three wickets in just four overs before ending with 3/12.

The captain’s heroics with the leather would only serve as consolation, however, as a faltering performance in their batting innings saw the hosts as eventual 84-run winners.

In the much closer Kempton-Old Boys clash, Old Boys stand-in skipper Casey Arnold conceded that they simply lost against a better team on the day.

“I think we were very good,” he said, commenting on the team’s overall performance.

“The boys played very well in my opinion. We came close against a very strong Kempton Park side, but in the end we just lost against the better team.

“We missed Nic (Nicholas) Lockyer there, but our focus is back on the 50-over top 8.”

Old Boys posted a total of 98 to lose by 20 runs.
