The ‘legendary’ water leak

Very often, water leaks come and go, but this particular one has been around for 18 months now.

Not even the water crisis facing the region could move the Ekurhuleni Metro to fix a water leak that first started in August 2015.

It is outside a premises at 217 Main Road in Anderbolt, an industrial park where numerous businesses operate.

Property manager at DJ’s Property Management, Sue van der Merwe, reported this leak to council in August 2015. Since then she has followed up hundreds of times with various people as well as Rand Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation.

“To our dismay and disgust, to date this issue has still not been sorted out. The leak is coming from one of the water pipes on the council side in the driveway.

“The metro came to sort this out in August 2015 when originally reported, whereby they dug a hole in our driveway, looked at the leak and promptly left,” she said.

According to her, nothing has been done to sort this leak out since, despite every attempt from the property management to have this resolved.

In the interim they have had to fill this hole, as vehicles are getting damaged because motorists can’t see the hole due to the water.

“Not to mention the damage this has caused to the road outside our property, specifically our main entrance, where the water accumulates and we now have potholes at the entrance to the park.

“I followed up with council again on Tuesday, January 10, this year, whereby I was told that they can’t tell me when this will be done.

“This is beyond ridiculous. The Department of Water and Sanitation advised me that the turnaround time should be 36 to 48 hours,

“We’ve been waiting for 18 months now.”

“I urgently require some feedback as to when this will be sorted and finalised. If council is not going to do this, we will have no choice but to sort this issue out ourselves and claim back all costs involved from Ekurhuleni Council.”
