Casey shines in CBC’s premier league 2017 opener
Christian Brothers’ College Eastern Cricket Premier League side began 2017 in style with an emphatic 110-run victory over Duduza in Boksburg on Sunday, January 15.
Sent in to bat first, the home side’s collective effort left little room for error in the absence of some key batsmen, including incumbent captain Nicholas Lockyer.
Stand-in skipper Casey Arnold took matters into his own hands and led the CBC charge following a stuttering start behind the crease which saw opening duo Bryce Parsons and Mpho Nzimande dismissed for a combined 20.
Enter Arnold.
In addition to his two wickets taken in six overs of bowling, the top-order batsman produced a delightful batting display and was just four runs short from registering a double half-century as he finished with 96.
His input did not only swiftly stabilise his side’s batting innings, but it put them in a great position to build on.
Despite the CBC batting order failing to significantly complement their skipper’s performance, they did protect it as the hosts finished their innings on a feasible winning score of 241/8 in their allotted overs.
The home side was as impressive in the bowling stakes as they limited the hapless visitors to 131. Duduza’s long day was summed up by Xolani Mahlaba finishing as his side’s top scorer with 25.
Sizwe Zulu’s production of (3/54; one maiden) saw him end the day as the game’s top bowler.
q Meanwhile, CBC neighbours the Boksburg Cricket Club crashed and burned at the Barnard Stadium in the hands of the hosts Kempton Park.
The travellers were handed a crushing 272-run defeat in Kempton after being bowled all-out for 93. The hosts had earlier piled up a 365 total. – @SabeloBoksburg
