B20 cricket bowls launches with a bang
Cricket bowls, the new format of bowls, was launched in Benoni on Saturday October 22.
People arrived in exponential numbers to witness the launch, which contributed to the event exceeding all expectations, according to cricket bowls founder Tony Norris.
Clubs arrived from far and wide, inlcuding six visiting clubs from the Ekurhuleni district. They varied from the Benoni Country Club, to as far afield as the Edenvale and the Kempton Park Bowling Clubs.
The action on the pitch was initially clouded with scepticism from players, but they hit their stride as they got more ends under their belts.
The event also enjoyed a lot of support from spectators from other clubs, plus the general public who came to see what exactly the sport is about.
Cricket bowls was also launched among six clubs in Natal recently, with the Gillitts Bowling Club hosting the launch. Clubs are said to have already ordered the sport’s playing equipment in an aim to form a cricket bowl league on a social basis.
According to Norris, another area that has come to light for this format of bowls, is with companies’ team building events.
“With most companies when team-building or having a general fun day, the organiser says: ‘let’s head for the golf course’. That immediately omits the ladies – or most of them – but with cricket bowls, all can be included as we find that ladies pick it up just as quick, if not quicker than men.
“So cricket bowls is another alternative to the list of what to do for team-building.”
Norris also added that it’s their intention to launch the sport into as many clubs as possible. Should there be interested clubs, contact him on 082 553 1607. – @SabeloBoksburg
