Cricket: Boksburg maintains perfect start, CBC stumbles
The Boksburg Cricket Club continued with its sensational form this season, as it maintained its perfect start at Bedfordview’s expense, on Sunday, October 16.
The Prince George Park outfit’s handsome, six-wicket victory is its third bonus point win in succession, and has seen it collect all the points which were on offer in the side’s fixtures thus far.
The home side, which has become the third victim of the Boksburg fire (borrowed from Protea fire by Boksburg captain John Haywood), follows the likes of Springs Old Boys and United, who’ve also already fallen against the hungry local outfit.
Having won the toss over his opposite number, Jason Smith, Haywood elected to bowl, a decision his team’s bowlers apparently relished as their performance beautifully set the tone for the batters to get the job done.
The bowling performance, which restricted Bedfordview to 175 all-out, was led by Haywood, Chris Opperman and Ruben Scheepers, who all took a brace of wickets, including three maidens, between them.
The team’s collective clinical bowling performance saw a total of six players take wickets.
Boksburg’s innings with the willow got underway with Haywood and Adam Forbes combining, before the former was dismissed for 28.
Forbes finished with 26 and fellow top-order batsman Tyrone Cameron added 19 before wicket-keeper Michael Weldon and Opperman clinched the win.
Weldon finished as his side’s top scorer, with his undefeated half-ton, while Opperman finished with an unbeaten 23.
The day’s top scorer accolade, however, belonged to Bedfordview opener Riaan van Aardt, who hit 65.
* Meanwhile, Boksburg’s neighbours, CBC Old Boys, continued with their slow start to the campaign against Alberton, who secured a three-wicket win in their backyard.
A typically sensational knock of 90 runs by star batsman Wesley Coulentianos led CBC to their total of 233 but the home side was not to be denied.
Alberton’s Kevin Ekron was also impressive behind the crease on the day and his 86 helped his side secure the important win.
In the leather stakes, CBC’s Craig Parker finished with a hat-trick, while Stefano di Bartolomeo and Alberton pair Jaques Kaster and JC Maritz took braces. – @SabeloBoksburg
